CHELSEA THE BIGGEST CLUB BY 2014

In an uncharacteristic display of bravado and exeaggeration,Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has stolen Jose Mourinho's thunder as troblemakerin chief by declairing that Chelsea will have overtaken Manchester United as the world's biggest club by 2014

I won't be so naive as to believe that the fact that Chelsea meet Manchester United, coincidentally Kenyon's former employers, in a high profile, high stakes game in the English Premiership this weekend has nothing to do with Kenyon's sudden rash statement but if he was hoping to play some mind games with Sir Alex Ferguson he seems to have missed the target.

Manchester United boss Ferguson knows Kenyon all too well from his time at Old Trafford and has wasted no time in rubbishing Kenyon's assumption that United's perch is there for the taking citing the millions of Manchester United fans all over the world as proof of the Lancashire club's continued dominance on a worldwide scale.

DROGBA SAID

Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has beaten the boo-boys who almost drove him out of English soccer to become one of the successes of the season.

Drogba was heavily criticised last season when he hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons - forcing him to reconsider his entire future in England. The former Marseille man was accused of using his hand to score against Manchester City as well as being a 'diver' - a label that almost pushed him out of Stamford Bridge.

Drogba said: "I can understand if they are unhappy when I don't play well. Wherever I play I always give everything for my team, and I always have a lot of respect for my shirt and my club. I handled the ball but this is part of the game. I try to score and if the referee sees the handball there is a restart. He didn't see it, so for me it is (part of) the game."

CHELSEA 0 VS BREMAN 1

Werder Bremen's Per Mertesacker ensured a gripping conclusion to UEFA Champions League Group A with the only goal of an entertaining contest against Chelsea FC, who nevertheless progressed to the first knockout round.

Exciting finale
The German international defender's first-half header proved enough to beat the English champions and set up an intriguing pair of fixtures on Matchday 6. Chelsea and Bremen both have ten points, with the English side top of the section by virtue of their head-to-head record against Bremen and guaranteed a place in the last 16, with bottom team PFC Levski Sofia their final-day opponents. Their German rivals will advance too should they avoid defeat in the Camp Nou against FC Barcelona, who must win to maintain their hold on the trophy.

Early danger
Both clubs showed their intentions early on. Bremen created the first opening seconds after the kick-off when Daniel Jensen released Hugo Almeida but John Terry arrived in time to make an important clearance. However, the visitors subsequently gained the upper hand, Didier Drogba providing the opportunity for Michael Essien to fire wide before another midfielder, John Obi Mikel, spurned an even better chance, heading wastefully over after Terry had nodded a long ball from Geremi into his path.

Bremen breakthrough
Bremen refused to be cowed and continued to make situations of their own. Clemens Fritz did well on the right before feeding the ball to Diego who forced Carlo Cudicini into his first save of the evening from the edge of the area. The Brazilian playmaker then demonstrated his passing skills by freeing Hugo Almeida but the striker shot wide. The Bundesliga outfit had looked particularly threatening from set-pieces, and it was little surprise the opening goal came from that source in the 27th minute, Mertesacker escaping Drogba to meet Torsten Frings's corner with a powerful downward header that gave Cudicini no chance.

WHAT HAPPEN TO UNITED

CELTIC 1 UNITED 0

UNITED'S Champions League hopes remain in the balance after defeat against Celtic at Parkhead.

The Reds needed only a point to gain qualification to the knock-out phase of the competition, but despite dominating the game for long periods they were undone by Shunsuke Nakamura’s sublime free-kick.

United had a chance to hit back when Thomas Gravesen was penalised for handling in the box, but Artur Boruc saved Louis Saha's late penalty.

The result means Celtic have qualified for the next stage, while United must gain at least a point against Benfica on December 6.

Sir Alex Ferguson started with arguably his strongest 11, with Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville both used despite speculation they would be rested ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea.

Gabriel Heinze got the nod at left-back, while Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes established midfield superiority early on.

Giggs was unlucky to be called back for offside with just after quarter of an hour gone when he was clean through, and the Welsh winger then miscontrolled to squander a potential scoring chance.

Neville and Heinze were getting forward to good effect as Celtic struggled to impose themselves on the game, although the Hoops defence were coping with the movement of Saha and Wayne Rooney.

Bobo Balde felled Scholes with a reckless challenge just outside the box, but Giggs’ effort was deflected over the bar. From the resulting corner, Rooney fizzed a volley wide.

AIMING THE TOP(CHELSEA)

Jose Mourinho has admitted he is disappointed Chelsea are trailing Manchester United in The Premiership.

The two big guns have set a scorching pace and have opened up an eight-point gap over the chasing pack.

Chelsea, who have been peerless for two seasons, find themselves three points adrift of The Red Devils and it is a position Mourinho is uncomfortable with

"What I feel in relation to Man United is we are second in The Premiership and there is still a long, long time to play," he said on Sky Sports News.

"But even with a lot of months to play for The Premiership, we are not happy to be second in this moment.

"We want to be first all the time."

Mourinho's Blues could go top of the table with a heavy victory over United on Sunday, so the stakes at Old Trafford are extremely high.

Howard Webb has been chosen to take charge of the game and Mourinho feels he has the mental strength to cope with a game of such importance.

"Every time I see Mr Webb he looks like a very solid referee," Mourinho said.

"He is the type of referee that the big decisions of the game, normally the ones that decide the game, are the right ones.

"I don't choose referees. I accept the referee the committee sends. I always wish them well before the game starts. After the game, sometimes I'm disappointed, but before the game I always trust them."
